I'm sorry you don't usually find books/items on the shelves! Please do feel free to grab an employee next time you have that problem and we'd be happy to do some investigating for you before you have to leave empty handed. You can also place requests on any item you see in the catalog and then we'll put it on the hold shelf for you and contact you when it's ready to be picked up (see this page for more details).
When you place a hold on something that is checked in at the library location you'd like to pick it up at, it is usually available for you by the next day. If you place a hold on something that is checked in at a library location other than the one you want to pick it up at, it typically takes 2-3 days for it to arrive.
